ALEXANDRIA, Va. (February 22, 2009)– Northern Virginia Community College clinched the regular season VCCS Eastern Region Championship with a 83-73 victory over Southside Virginia Community College Sunday afternoon at T.C. Williams High School. NOVA enjoyed a slim 39-36 halftime advantage before pulling away from the Force and securing the conference crown with a 10-1 record in league play.
Joe Shewmaker led NOVA with 23 points and Sam Eligwe added 19. Mark Phillips scored 12 points and John Bayardelle netted 11 points as NOVA’s other double-figure scorer.
Roger Lassiter scored a game high 26 points for SVCC. A.J. Fowlkes added 16 points and Eric Dubose and Michael Johnson each scored 10 points.
NOVA will return to action on Friday, March 6, at the VCCS State Championship Tournament held at The Apprentice School in Newport News.

ANNANDALE, VA (February 15, 2009)– Northern Virginia Community College knocked off league rival Tidewater Community College 87-73 Sunday afternoon the Ernst Cultural Community Center gymnasium to successfully conclude 2009 homecoming festivities. NOVA jumped out to an impressive 43-18 halftime advantage and held strong for the victory.
Malik N’Garmin and Sam Eligwe each paced NOVA with 16 points. Mark Phillips scored 14 points and Joe Shewmaker netted 12 points as NOVA’s other double-figure performer. HALFTIME: NOVA 45; TCC 28

(February 7, 2009) – Robert Montgomery scored a game high 49 points for New River Community College, but it wasn’t enough as Northern Virginia Community College rallied for a 117-107 victory over the Knights. Trailing 62-59 at intermission, NOVA outscored NRCC by 13 points in the closing half to secure the victory.
Joe Shewmaker led seven players in double-figures with 25 points for NOVA. John Bayerdelle and Sam Eligwe each netted 15 points. Malik N’Garmin and Mark Philips both contributed 14 points with Emanuel Willis and Joe Scorah scoring 10 points. John Reid helped NRCC with 18 points and Rob Campbell scored 15 points.

Hampton, VA ( January 31, 2009) The NOVA Raiders pervailed in a “Heavy Weight Fight” type of college basketball game at the Boo Williams Sports Complex in Hampton. With the lead changing hands numerous times

and both teams playing at 100 percent it was a spectators dream. This was the fifth staight VCCS win placing NOVA at 5-0 for the season and five games where NOVA has scored 100 points or more.
Sam Eligwe lead all NOVA players with 33 and Malik Garnim had twenty points with twelve coming in the second half. Thomas Nelson’s Chris Calvin lead his team with 35 points.
NOVA had to overcome a 5 point half time deficit and 12 for 13 from the foul line by Thomas Nelson’s Terrance Williams.
