Highlights of the 2007-2008 Season
NVCC Men’s Basketball Team beat Southwest CC which was 17 and 4 for the season.
NVCC Men’s Basketball Team beat the VCCS Champions for 2006-2007 Virginia Western CC
NVCC men’s Basketball Team beat the VCCS Champions for 2005-2006 Thomas Nelson CC
NVCC Men’s Basketball Team beat the VCCS Champions for previous years Tidewater Community College
The NVCC Men’s basketball team achieved a major milestone with the win in LaPlata Maryland. NVCC defeated the College of Southern Maryland by the score of 82 to 61. NVCC had nine players that wanted to play as part of a team with no grumbling and complaining with regard to playing time or the position that they played. They came to win and they played to win. NVCC developed a ten point lead in the first ten minutes of the game. CSM never got closer than eight points for the rest of the game. Is truly a team win.
This may be the first time in “modern history” that NVCC has beaten a Maryland JUCO team. The MD JUCO is one of the top three regions (region XX) in the United States. The MD JUCO programs are well organized, well funded, practice five days per week and offer athletic scholarships.
Because of the contacts of the coaching staff and the well earned reputation of the NVCC team as being one of the more competitive teams, NVCC had been able to schedule five top NJCAA basketball programs this season:
College of Southern Maryland – CSM has been a three time MDJUCO champion and has a very well run program with five practices a week as well as athletic scholarships. CSM is a member of the NJCAA.
Montgomery College Germantown- MCG is one of the top MDJUCO teams and a NJCAA member. NVCC scored 99 points and gave them a heck of a game.
Community College of Philadelphia – They are one of the top NJCAA programs and were the previous winners of the state of PA last year. NVCC gave them all they could handle with the game going down to the wire. Their coaching staff was so impressed with our team that they want to have home and away games next year with NVCC. The coach from Wilmington University attended the game and was so impressed that Brad Dutton has been offered a scholarship. After reviewing the game tape Columbia Union is also in discussion with Brad.
Harford CC – HCC won 24 games in 2006-2007 and had a number of returning players. NVCC played HCC down to the wire losing by two last seconds’ three point shoots rimming out our last shot to which would have resulting in NVCC winning. Their coaching staff was so impressed with our team that they want to have home and away games next year with NVCC.
Cecil- Cecil was the winner of the 2006 National NJCAA championship as is ranked number one in the country for 2007-2008. Cecil has four players that have D1 scholarship offers one of whom is going to Indiana. This one most poorly officiated games we have ever seen with over 25 traveling violations called against NVCC. None the less it was great experience for our players who may never have the opportunity again to play against the number one team in the country. One other positive note, one of the four year college head coaches that is looking at one of our players came down from Delaware to see our game and player. This game helped firm up the commitment by Wilmington University to offer an athletic scholarship to one of our players.
It is very rare for a team that is considered to be an independent community college team to have an opportunity to play one NJCAA team per season much less five.
NVCC Men’s Basketball Team lost in the final four of the VCCS Tournament Championship to South Side Daniels in double overtime and finished 4th in the tournament. It is interesting to note that there were no returning players from last year’s team and only three players on the tournament team that were on the team at the beginning of the season.
NVCC had two players selected for the VCCS 2008 all-tournament team:
Michael Abdeljabar
Sam Eligwe
